Why people run for Bede
Helen Birnie, an Admin Manager, ran two years ago for Bede in the London Marathon.
She said:
I am about to embark on my fourth marathon (madness you might think). Each marathon that I have completed I have always selected a very worthwhile charity, and this time is no exception!
I am running for the Bede House Association. The charity was set up in 1938 to help the disadvantaged families in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe. Bede runs support groups for a range of community projects, including support for people with learning difficulties and support for those who have suffered domestic violence and hate crime.
Andy Coombe, a business consultant and his friend Mark, ran in the 2010 London Marathon. He said:
It has been a lifelong ambition for me to run the marathon. As a teenager I trained for a marathon, only to have it cancelled at the last minute, so I'm very excited to finally be doing it! And it's good to be running for the Bede - it's a great charity at the heart of the community, doing award-winning work with local people. My friend Mark Thompson has run several marathons so will be supporting me in making the run a success.
In 2011 Victor Mantey, a Chartered Engineer, successfully completed his 1st marathon in record time (4 hours 14 mins, running the first 13 miles in just under 2 hours)!
At 52 years old, this is my first marathon, hence I was really looking forward to taking part in this great event and most of all raising money for a worthwhile organisation.
I really enjoyed the day. I did not feel tired but my knee started hurting near the end. It was a great experience and I am glad I did it.
26 miles in just over 4 hours is not bad for an old guy!
